How to create a bespoke rug with Beata Heuman

Beata Heuman

“The whole point of creating something bespoke is making something you can’t find; I think it should be something a bit more unusual. If you have a space that you really love, it is really life enhancing, so that’s why I do it.”

Known for her whimsical and imaginative interiors, Swedish-born Beata Heuman is a celebrated interior designer based in West London. Her home, which she shares with her husband and two young children, is an eclectic mix of maximalist design with Scandinavian accents, in a riot of colour, pattern and textures. Working alongside our in-house design team, Beata created a unique bespoke rug for her children’s playroom, featuring a fantastical, folklore-inspired mermaid design. See below for an insight into her bespoke journey.

“This is the place where my children, they spend all their time there, they play on the rug. I wanted it to be something welcoming and imaginative.”

STEPS TO CREATE A BESPOKE RUG

1. Choosing inspiration

Heuman met with our design team in her west London studio to discuss potential inspirations for the rug, choosing to opt with an imaginative, folkloric motif.

Marlon Brando

“The image on the rug itself is inspired by a photograph of Marlon Brando, it’s a tattoo of a mermaid riding a fish. That’s the inspiration behind it!”

“The yellow background of the rug and the cut-out figure was inspired by the Fante flag I have above my fireplace in my living room. It was a royal banner from the Kingdom of Dahomey.”

2. Picking poms and materials

With a colour scheme in mind, Heuman chose final colours and materials for the rug. Picking from our poms, she chose the perfect hues for the background and mermaid.

Heuman chose to have her design crafted entirely in wool, which is prized for its resilience and natural stain-resistant qualities, ideal for children’s rooms.

3. Creating the final artwork

Our in-house designers created a final artwork and a sample was crafted by our weavers. Once approved by Heuman, the rug was put into production in our weaving houses in Nepal.

4. Handcrafting the design

The artwork design was then transformed into a handknotted rug by our master craftsmen in Nepal, which takes between 16-24 weeks to weave. Each knot is carefully considered and knotted. It’s a slow craft but one which results in a masterpiece which will last forever.

5. The final design – delivered and installed in-situ

Day of arrival! The rug is carefully installed by our delivery team into Heuman’s playroom for her children to enjoy.

“I’ve never designed a rug bespoke for myself before, just for clients, so that was really fun. I wanted it to be something welcoming, imaginative and I think they will always remember this mermaid rug they had as children.”
